Lebanon Frees Hannibal Gaddafi from Jail

(MENAFN) Lebanese authorities have freed Hannibal Gaddafi, son of slain Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, on bail following almost ten years of detention linked to accusations he concealed details about a vanished religious leader.

Hannibal's release Monday came after a judicial ruling slashed his bail from $11 million to approximately $900,000 and removed a travel restriction in place since his 2015 arrest.

"Hannibal is officially free and has the full right to choose the destination that he wants," his lawyer, Charbel Milad al-Khoury, told media.

The 49-year-old Hannibal spent years imprisoned in Beirut without trial, facing charges of withholding intelligence regarding the 1978 vanishing of influential Lebanese Shiite cleric Musa al-Sadr and two companions during a Libyan visit. The cleric's disappearance remains among Lebanon's most enduring political enigmas. Al-Sadr's supporters blame the former Libyan administration for kidnapping him following discussions with the elder Gaddafi, allegations Tripoli has consistently rejected.

Hannibal, married to a Lebanese model, was apprehended in Lebanon after being abducted by an armed faction in Syria, where he had sought refuge after the 2011 NATO-supported revolt that toppled and killed his father.

His relatives and the Tripoli-based Libyan government have persistently demanded his freedom, highlighting his "deteriorating" medical condition. They contend he was merely two years old when the cleric disappeared and bore no involvement in the matter.

Last week, a Libyan government delegation traveled to Lebanon for negotiations concerning Hannibal's situation. His attorney stated the representatives delivered an investigative dossier on the Imam Al-Sadr case to Lebanese officials. media, referencing a Justice Ministry statement, reported the delegation covered his bail payment.

In a declaration last month, the Justice Ministry asserted the former leader's son faces illegal imprisonment, warning that Lebanese authorities will be held "responsible for his health and life."
