China Coal Mine Blast Leaves Dozens Dead in Shanxi Province

(MENAFN) A deadly gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China has claimed the lives of at least 82 people, according to official reports released Saturday.

The incident took place Friday night at the Liushenyu coal mine located in Qinyuan county in Shanxi province. At the time of the explosion, 247 miners were working underground.

Rescue crews and emergency personnel are still operating at the site as authorities continue searching for missing workers and evaluating the scale of the disaster. Officials have also opened an investigation to determine what caused the explosion.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered authorities to carry out full-scale rescue operations for those still unaccounted for and ensure immediate medical treatment for the injured. He additionally demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the cause of the accident and emphasized that those responsible must face legal accountability.

He further called on officials across the country to learn from the tragedy by tightening industrial safety supervision and increasing efforts to identify and remove potential hazards in order to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Premier Li Qiang instructed authorities to improve coordination among rescue teams and urged broader safety reforms across major industries. Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing was sent to the disaster area to supervise emergency response measures and recovery efforts.
