Trump-Putin summit conducted at US army base
The meeting, set for Friday, will focus on efforts to end the war in Ukraine, now in its third year. It will mark the two leaders’ first one-on-one summit since their 2018 encounter in Helsinki.
The base, located near Anchorage, combines Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson Army post, merged in 2010. It also houses Alaska Command, overseeing US forces in the state, and the Alaskan NORAD Region, which provides aerospace monitoring and defense.
The site carries symbolic weight, as US forces there frequently intercept Russian aircraft approaching American airspace near Alaska.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Trump has made brokering peace a central priority of his second term, though his efforts have yet to achieve a breakthrough.
