Trump anticipates 'constructive conversation' with Putin

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Monday he expects a “constructive conversation” with Russian President Vladimir Putin and expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for rejecting territorial concessions.

Speaking at a White House press conference, Trump stated he would urge Putin to end the war and hoped for a rapid ceasefire. He also said he plans to call Zelensky and European leaders immediately after the Alaska summit, scheduled for Friday. Trump suggested he could participate in a three-way meeting if necessary.

Trump criticized Zelensky for requiring constitutional approval for any land swaps, questioning why such approval was needed given the ongoing war. Vice President JD Vance noted that one key obstacle was Putin’s previous refusal to meet with Zelensky, which the US had now worked to overcome.

Vance described the summit as an effort to find a negotiated settlement acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine, while acknowledging that neither side would be fully satisfied. The announcement of a US-Russia summit without Ukraine’s direct involvement sparked concerns in Europe that any deal might demand territorial concessions from Kyiv—an outcome the European Union has opposed.
