Kuleba Warns Ukraine Must Accept Deal to Avoid Prolonged Conflict
Speaking at a conference in Kiev on Monday, Kuleba, who served as foreign minister from 2020 to 2024, noted that both Ukraine and Russia possess the resources to sustain the war for an extended period.
He predicted that without a political resolution, the front line “will move every year.”
“We are in a situation where Russia has the ability to destroy us, and we are not strong enough to fully protect ourselves,” Kuleba said.
He emphasized that only a deal “that no one will like” which secures a “tactical defeat and strategic victory” could avert “many more years of war… even worse.”
His remarks come amid growing discussion over a US-drafted peace proposal for Ukraine.
Reports suggest the initial plan would require Ukraine to cede control over parts of Donbass, abandon its NATO membership ambitions, and accept restrictions on the size of its military. In return, Ukraine would reportedly gain certain security guarantees from the West.
As part of continuing diplomatic negotiations, a Ukrainian delegation met with US officials in Miami on Sunday.
Media outlets described the four-hour meeting as “not easy” and reported that “the search for formulations and solutions continues.”
