Venezuela’s VP condemns US “abduction” of Maduro following airstrikes

(MENAFN) Venezuela’s vice president on Saturday strongly condemned what she described as the US “abduction” of President Nicolas Maduro following overnight airstrikes, accusing Washington of using military force as a cover for regime change aimed at controlling the country’s vast oil, mineral, and energy resources.

Speaking in a televised address, Delcy Rodriguez said the events had exposed Washington’s real intentions. "The masks have fallen," she said, arguing that the operation sought to strip Venezuela of its political sovereignty and impose a new form of external domination.

She described the current situation facing the country as "barbaric," accusing the United States of using an ongoing blockade and military pressure as mechanisms of subjugation.

Rodriguez insisted that despite being forcibly taken by US special forces, Maduro remains Venezuela’s only legitimate president. She demanded the immediate release of both Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who was also detained.

"The Venezuelan people are outraged by the illegal, illegitimate kidnapping of the president and the first lady," she said.

Describing the episode as a “truly shameful” ideological assault, she added: “The governments of the world are simply shocked that Venezuela is the victim and target of an attack of this nature, which undoubtedly has Zionist overtones.”

Appearing alongside senior officials — including the head of the National Assembly, the interior minister, and the foreign and defense ministers — Rodriguez urged the public to remain calm.

She called on citizens to stay united in defense of national sovereignty against what she labeled an "imperialist empire."

Her remarks followed an earlier audio statement in which she demanded that Washington immediately provide "proof of life" for the detained president and first lady.
