Police Arrest Protesters at London Rally Supporting Palestine Action

(MENAFN) Police in the United Kingdom have arrested more than 500 people during a demonstration in central London linked to support for the banned activist group Palestine Action, according to reports.

The Metropolitan Police said a total of 523 individuals were detained during the protest, which took place in and around Trafalgar Square. Authorities stated that the arrests were made on suspicion of expressing support for a proscribed organisation. Those detained reportedly ranged in age from 18 to 87.

The demonstration was organised by the group Defend Our Juries, which has been involved in previous protest activity. Police confirmed that the gathering eventually dispersed and participants left the area after officers intervened.

According to a statement from the police, investigations into those arrested are ongoing as individuals continue to be processed following the event.

Organisers of the protest disputed the police response, claiming on social media that authorities were detaining peaceful demonstrators for displaying placards expressing opposition to violence and support for Palestine Action. They argued that the arrests were unjustified and targeted lawful protest activity.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International UK also criticised the arrests, describing them as a further restriction on civil liberties and raising concerns about the implications for freedom of expression in the country.

The group noted that a High Court ruling earlier in the year had challenged the legal basis for the proscription of Palestine Action, adding to ongoing legal and political debate over how the organisation is classified.

Despite that ruling, police have continued to enforce restrictions related to public expressions of support for the group, contributing to heightened tensions between law enforcement authorities and protest organisers in London.
