Massive Wildfires Devastate Georgia, Destroying Homes, Forcing Evacuations
As of Monday evening, approximately 55,140 acres (22,314 hectares) had been consumed by the fires, with at least 120 homes destroyed. Officials described the situation in parts of southern Georgia as among the most destructive wildfire events in the state’s history.
The most heavily affected areas include Clinch County and Brantley County, where fires have been burning for more than a week. Brief rainfall from scattered thunderstorms provided limited relief, but conditions remain largely uncontrolled.
Hundreds of residents have been displaced and are currently staying in temporary shelters or hotels, including facilities in Brantley County and emergency housing at Selden Park in Brunswick. Some residents were briefly allowed to return to affected areas to assess damage, though many remain uncertain about the status of their homes.
In Clinch County, the Pineland fire has burned more than 32,000 acres and is partially contained, though dozens of structures remain threatened. In Brantley County, the Highway 82 fire has spread across more than 21,000 acres with minimal containment and continues to endanger hundreds of homes.
Emergency response teams numbering over 400 personnel are working to control the blazes. Resources deployed include helicopters, fire engines, and bulldozers aimed at reinforcing containment lines and slowing the spread of the flames.
