Trump Reviews Iran Proposal in National Security Meeting
“I will confirm the president has met with his national security team this morning … the proposal was being discussed,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters during a briefing.
She added that she would not provide further details ahead of official decisions, while emphasizing that Washington’s position on Iran remains firmly defined.
“I don't want to get ahead of the president or his national security team. What I will reiterate is that the president's red lines with respect to Iran have been made very, very clear, not just to the American public, but also to them as well,” she said.
According to reports, the meeting comes amid renewed diplomatic activity aimed at restarting negotiations between Washington and Tehran after weeks of conflict and unsuccessful talks.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also commented earlier on Monday, saying Iran appears willing to engage in an agreement with the United States, but insisted that any deal must prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
“We have to ensure that any deal that is made … definitively prevents them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point,” he said.
Rubio’s comments came amid media reports suggesting that Iran has proposed linking the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to the lifting of US restrictions and an end to the conflict, while postponing broader nuclear negotiations to a later stage.
According to reports, Iran and the United States previously held discussions in Islamabad on April 11, but those talks did not result in an agreement to end the conflict that began on February 28.
